PRs highlight final tune up before SCIAC Championship

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In their final race before the SCIAC Cross Country Championships, Chapman's men's and women's cross country teams took to the course at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. Sophomore Drake Butler ran a personal-best to highlight the met for the Panthers.

Butler's time of 27:06.24 was the best of his career at Chapman and paced the Panther squad. He took 41st overall and the Panthers finished in 11th as a team. Sophomore Chris Pai ran a 27:39.34 to take 58th overall and freshman Kian Deshler recorded a season-best time of 28:24. Junior Jonah Soltes ran a 29:02.03 and sophomore Tomas Aragone finished at 30:00.69 to complete the Panther scoring.

"This morning's meet was a good indicator of where we are in the season and how we are progressing going into conference in two weeks. Coach Carrell and I are pleased with our performance and ready to prepare for the start of the post season championship races."

The women's team took 13th as a team but saw a personal-best run from freshman Ryly Yee. Yee crossed the finish line at 26:31.05 in the 6k race for the best run of her young career. Fellow freshman Emma Eglinton and junior Mia Hernandez pushed each other through the course but Eglington pulled ahead to pace the Panthers with a 25:13.68 to take 70th overall. Hernandez wasn't far behind at 25:20.66. Yee was the third Panther across the finish line, followed by junior Nika Cokas at 26:57.92. Less than a second later, sophomore Jasmine Labrador crossed the finish line at 26:58.82 to round out the scoring runs for the Panthers.

Chapman will take the next two weeks to train for the SCIAC Cross County Championships on Oct. 28 in Chino, Calif.
