Reece beats own school 5K record

ORANGE, Calif. – Freshman Arabella Reece is out here shattering the Chapman 5K record – the record that she set last weekend. The rookie beat her own time by nearly six seconds to take 11th place overall at the CSU San Bernardino Coyote Challenge earlier this morning.

Reece came in at 18:03.5, leading the way for the Panthers and setting the school record that she set last weekend with a time of 18:09.1.

The freshman wasn't the only woman to hit a new personal best in the 5K race. Both sophomores Montana Jelden and Ryly Yee set new personal records this morning. Jelden finished with a time of 22:07.10 while Yee finished at 23:28.5 for their best times yet.

A couple of season bests from the women rounded out a great showing for the Panthers. Sophomore Emma Eglinton came in at 20:10.0 while senior Nika Cokas finished just behind at 20:14.3 for new 2018 bests. Senior Mia Hernandez finished just six seconds after Cokas with a time of 20:20.0.

"Today was a good day for the Panther women. We competed well against a strong field with athletes/teams from the Div. 2, 3 and Community college level. We ran smart races and our training is starting to show. We are excited for the upcoming down phase in our training to prepare for the second half of season. Our next meet we will move up to the 6k at Pomona Pitzer Oct. 6, where there will be great competition as well," said head coach DeAndra'e Woods.

Freshman Ben Clark led the men's side, coming in 61st place overall with a time of 27:45.2 in the 8K race. A couple of the men also tallied career-bests on the trail. Freshman Eli Haas finished with a time of 28:32.4 while sophomore Jose Guerrero came in at 30.22.1. Senior Jonah Soltes, Guerrero and freshman Enrique Brenes finished one right after the other with Soltes finishing just a few seconds before Guerrero at 30:19.7 and Brenes just after at 30:41.2.

Senior Sayeed Mohammed and sophomore Emerson Klump rounded out the men's 8K race for the Panthers. Mohammed finished with a time of 31:53.4 while Klump ran across the finish line at 33:06.2.

Says Woods of the men's race, "We started the race out smart today, but some are feeling the effects of our first phase of training. Our goal isn't the Coyote invitation, it is to hopefully peak during the championship end of season. We (Coach Maizland & I), are pleased with where we are in our training and mileage right now."

The Panthers take a well-deserved break next weekend before heading to Pomona College for the Pomona-Pitzer Invite on Saturday, Oct. 6.

"This upcoming week will be a great rest week, especially for our newbies and athletes that have aches and soreness. We look forward to the next phase in our training and competition," said coach Woods.
