Eight personal records set at UC Riverside Invitational

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's cross country teams continued the 2019 season at the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday morning. Freshman Jacob Millen continued to pace the men's side, helping the Panthers to a sixth place finish, one spot above SCIAC opponent Cal Lutheran.

Millen set a personal record, crossing this finish line in 36th place overall with a time of 26:50.5. Junior Jose Guerrero was the next to finish, setting a personal-record time of 27:42.2.

Freshmen Anthony Hart, David Anderson, Micah Char and sophomore Davis Carmichael also set personal records at the invitational. Hart beat his personal record by 11 seconds, finishing with a time of 28:37.7, followed by Anderson's eight second personal record just 14 seconds later. Char shattered his own record by two minutes and 12 seconds, running a personal-best 31:52.9. Carmichael came in at 29:39.5, beating his own personal record by 13 seconds.

In their first career 8k races, freshmen Charles Sakamaki and Chase Shanafelt ran a 29:13.5 and 33:12.13 respectively.

Two women's runner set personal records in Riverside, including a huge race from freshman Olivia Armstrong. The rookie shattered her personal record by one minute and 13 seconds, pacing the women with a time of 19:11.6 for a 41st finish overall. Fellow freshman Jordan Diaz also set a personal record, crossing the finish line at a time of 20:44.8.

Freshman Audrey James and junior Emma Eglinton set a couple of season-bests as they finished within four seconds of each other. James crossed the finish line at 20:15.1 with Eglinton just three runners behind at 20:19.3.

Freshmen Ella Conway and Shirley Sallas also set personal bests to round out the women's side. Conway crossed the finish line at 20:55.8 for her best race of the season and Sallas finished at 22:06.5.

"Coach Maizland and I are pumped for this group of runners", said head coach DeAndra'e Woods. "This morning we had a lot of personal and season bests despite the heat. Our returners are leading the newcomers well and the newcomers are believing and trusting the process. As we head into the new training cycle, we're excited to see how the season unfolds."

Assistant coach Barron Maizland also had positive remarks from the race. "Both men and women did well to brave the hot conditions and still have strong performances."

The Panthers take a week off before heading to The Masters University Cross Country Invitational in Santa Clarita, Calif. on Saturday, Sept. 28.
