McGee shutout, Carbajal slam power baseball to series sweep
ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University baseball team completed the three-game sweep of visiting University of Dallas, defeating the Crusaders 10-0 in a seven-inning "run rule" victory at Hart Park on Sunday. The Panthers won their fourth straight behind a nine-run first inning, and a stellar pitching performance by senior RHP Travis McGee.
The Chapman offense sent 13 men to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, scoring nine runs on just four hits off of three Crusader pitchers. After being hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance of the inning, senior OF Andrew Carbajal delivered the big blow of the inning, a two-out grand slam over the left field wall in his second time up, to give the Panthers an 8-0 lead.
Senior IF Mark Saatzer would later double home sophomore IF Tim Alhanati, extending the Panther lead to 9-0. Dallas starting RHP Denton Martin was removed from the game after recording just one out when he was struck in the foot by a line drive off the bat of Panthers' senior OF Connor Battaglia. Chapman capitalized (19-10) on five walks and a hit batter in the inning.
Carbajal, Saatzer (two doubles) and Battaglia (double) collected two hits apiece, including a combined four extra-base hits.
McGee held the Crusaders hitless through 5 2/3 innings, before Dallas senior IF Mark Carlson snuck a single through the left side of the infield. McGee would not allow another hit as he struck out a career-high 13 in his first career shutout and first complete game effort sinceApril 2012. The right-hander also lowered his ERA to 2.97.
The win was Chapman's 10th in a row over Dallas (15-18) dating back to 2009. The Panthers will return to SCIAC play when they take on Caltech in a three-game series April 11-12, including a home doubleheader on the 12th beginning at 11 a.m.
