George Fox salvages finale of weekend series

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University baseball team dropped the finale of a four-game series with visiting George Fox University (Ore.), 6-1 at Hart Park on Sunday afternoon. The Bruins salvaged the last of the weekend set and in the process snapped the Panthers' four-game winning streak. In spite of the loss, Chapman (15-7) has still won 12 of its past 14 games including an 8-2 home record during that stretch.

George Fox (11-14) received a big lift on the mound from RHP Taylor Dunn, who picked up his second victory of the year, tossing seven shutout innings and allowing just four hits.

The Bruins got a little aid from Chapman for their first three runs of the game, scoring an unearned run in the first inning and then capitalizing on two Panther errors and three walks to score two more in the fourth inning. That was all the offense George Fox would score off Panthers' senior RHP Kevin Klaess, but it was enough to pin the starter with just his second loss of the season.

Trailing 4-0 in the eighth inning, Chapman got on the board with a solo home run by freshman IF Jared Love, his team-leading fourth of the year. It was one of just six hits for the Panthers – the lowest hit total for Chapman in the past 15 games. Sophomore DH Forrest Wiederman was 2-for-3 for Chapman.

George Fox tacked on two more runs in the ninth on an RBI double and suicide squeeze play. Zach Rapacz led the Bruins going 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the seventh inning.

The Panthers continue their homestand against MIT on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Hart Park.
