Panthers outhit Whittier in Game 1 of series

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University baseball team opened up its three-game series against Whittier College with a 10-2 victory over the Poets in a SCIAC game at Hart Park on Friday afternoon. The Panthers outhit Whittier 17-6 racking up three homeruns, including two by sophomore OF Joey Bernal.

Trailing 2-1 in the third inning, Bernal homered to left to tie the game 2-2. Sophomore DH Forrest Wiederman then doubled down the right field line to knock in junior IF Tyler Cook to take the lead 3-2.

The Panthers then extended their lead 5-2 in the fourth inning with Bernal adding the sixth run in the bottom of the sixth. Chapman scored another two runs in the seventh when junior IF John Wiehe hit a two-run homer off the scoreboard to give the Panthers a 9-2 lead. The Panthers final run was knocked in on a double to left by freshman IF Jared Love.  

Wiehe finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate and turned three double plays out in the field while Bernal recorded a team-high of three RBI.

Freshman P Brad Steiner recorded the win for the Panthers improving his record to 4-1 this season while allowing Whittier just three hits in five innings.

Chapman (18-9 overall, 11-5 SCIAC) will continue their three-game series against Whittier College on Saturday April, 4 with first game of the doubleheader set at 11 a.m. The Panthers will return home on Saturday, April 11 for a SCIAC doubleheader against Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 11 a.m.
