Panthers finish fourth in SCIAC Postseason

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 3-seeded Chapman University baseball team relinquished an early lead and fell to No. 1-seeded Occidental College 5-2 on Saturday afternoon in round two of the SCIAC Baseball Postseason Tournament. The Panthers finished regular season third and SCIAC Postseason fourth.

Tied 2-2 in the fifth, Occidental capitalized on a Panther error to score Brady Fuller and Devon DeRaad to take the lead 4-2. The Tigers then held their lead through the next four and scored an insurance run on an RBI sac fly by Wilson Terra to earn the win.

The Panthers took the early lead, scoring two in the first inning to go up 2-1. Sophomore Jared Love started the scoring with a RBI single to score freshman Trevor Willits. Freshman Konnor Zickefoose followed it up with a ground ball to second base to score sophomore Gavin Blodgett.

Occidental scored its first run on a monster homerun by DeRaad over the right field to take the lead 1-0 in the first. Trailing 2-1 in the third, Jack Branche then hit an RBI double to right center to tie the game up 2-2.

The Tigers out-hit the Panthers 10-4 with the Panthers four hits coming from senior Greg Dillon, Zickefoose, Blodgett and Willits. Senior Matt Molnar suffered the loss after tossing 7.1 innings and striking out five.

The Panthers finish the season 26-15 and 20-8 in SCIAC play.
