Baseball back on track with win over Caltech

ORANGE, Calif. – Junior Jared Love drove in four runs and sophomore Joey Harmon tossed six solid innings as the Chapman University baseball team rebounded with a 10-3 win over Caltech on Friday. The Panthers (16-9, 8-5 SCIAC) scored in each of the first six innings to cruise to the win.

Harmon started strong and took a no-hitter into the fifth for his second start in a row. He allowed just one unearned run on three hits to pick up his second win of the season. He was dominant through the first four innings, picking up six of his strikeouts without allowing a hit. When Cortland Perry broke up Harmon's no-hit bid in the fifth, the Panthers were already in control with a 6-0 lead.

The Panthers scored a run in each of the first three innings to build the early 3-0 lead. They took advantage of a couple of Caltech miscues in the fourth, scoring three runs. Senior Tyler Cook capped the rally with an RBI-double into the left field corner. He finished the game 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a couple of runs scored.

Chapman added another insurance run in the fifth after Caltech got on the board with a sacrifice fly. In the sixth, Love launched his fifth homer of the year – a three-run homer to left center that capped a four-RBI day for him.

With a 10-1 lead, the Panthers went to the bullpen. Sophomore Mason Collins tossed a scoreless seventh with a strikeout. Senior Wyatt Hahn struck out the side but surrendered a run and freshman Jay Edwards closed out the game, allowing a run in his inning of work.

Freshman Aaron Wong made his Panther debut at second base. He drove in a pair of runs and smashed a triple to right center.

The Panthers travel to Caltech to close out the SCIAC series with a doubleheader but return to Hart Park on Sunday for an 11 a.m. nonconference game against Pacific.
