Garcia becomes first reliever to win SCIAC weekly award

ORANGE, Calif. – For the third time this season, a Chapman pitcher has been selected as the SCIAC Pitcher of the Week. Sophomore Nick Garcia became the first reliever to win the award this season with his first career weekly honor.

Garcia completed his second save of the season and struck out seven batters in three innings to help the Panthers to a sweep of Redlands. In the opening game of the series, Garcia came out of the bullpen with no outs and the bases loaded. With the tying run on first base, he struck out the next three batters in order to bring Redlands' rally to a sudden halt.

He struck out another batter in the ninth and struck out the side in the ninth inning of game three to finish off the sweep. The right-hander from San Carlos, Calif., has accumulated 34 strikeouts in 18.1 innings on the mound. He ranks sixth in the SCIAC despite being the only pitcher in the top-10 with less than 30 innings pitched.

Garcia has allowed just one run to cross the plate this year for a 0.49 ERA and has not allowed a run in his last nine innings pitched.

The Panthers face MIT tomorrow at 7 p.m. before a weekend series with Occidental.
