Another gem advances baseball to Regional Championship

ORANGE, Calif — Chapman baseball continued to stay hot with more outstanding pitching and defense to propel them to Sunday's championship game with a 3-1 over the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Saturday, May 21.

Wyatt Thompson pitched seven scoreless for Chapman striking out seven. Thompson made a multitude of huge pitches, forcing the Sagehens to strand nine runners on the base paths, including a huge ground out with the bases loaded to end the sixth inning.

Mike Gorman and Dylan Holt took over for Thompson, each pitching one inning, Gorman allowing the lone run, and Holt earning his second save of the tournament and fourth on the season.

Chapman's offense got going early scoring runs in the first and second innings. Nick Kondo led the game off with a single up the middle. Cooper Foard followed with a single and Davis Mieliwocki reached on an error the next at bat. With the bases loaded, AJ Anzai continued his clutch hitting with a RBI line drive single up the middle.

In the second inning, Kondo drove home Drake Mueller with a sacrifice fly to right field. Mueller then scored the third run of the game on a Cole Minato single up the middle.

The main difference in the game, which gave the Panthers extra opportunities on offense, were the six errors committed by Sagehen defenders.

With the victory, Chapman will move on to the Championship with the chance of a birth to the NCAA Super Regional round. Pomona-Pitzer heads straight into an elimination game against the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen.
