Cal Lutheran hands Chapman its third straight defeat

ORANGE, Calif. - The visiting Cal Lutheran University football team turned a four-point halftime lead into a 36-point victory with a big second half, defeating host Chapman University 49-13 at Ernie Chapman Stadium on Saturday night. The Kingsmen had little trouble moving the chains in the second half, totaling 315 yards of offense and scoring five touchdowns over the final 30 minutes.

Leading 14-10 at halftime, the second half became the Brian Stuart show for Cal Lutheran, which extended its current winning streak to five games. Stuart ran for four touchdowns in the second half alone and totaled 165 yards rushing in the game. The Kingsmen scored touchdowns on their first five possessions in the second half, four from Stuart and their final score came on a 69-yard touchdown pass from QB Wes Garwood to WR Jake Speckhard. Garwood had relieved starting QB Jericho Toilolo as the two combined for 296 passing yards.

The game began promisingly enough for Chapman (2-4), which scored first in a game for the first time this season and led 7-0 after one quarter. The Panthers - ranked No. 2 in the nation in kick returns - capitalized on another big return, this time from senior WR Dan Delahoussaye who went 52 yards and into Cal Lutheran territory on the game's opening play. Eleven plays and 44 yards later, sophomore QB Blake Vanderweil scored on a 2-yard run to put the Panthers on the board first.

Cal Lutheran (5-1) responded in the second quarter with back-to-back scoring drives of 65 and 58 yards to take a 14-7 lead.

The Panthers' longest drive of the night came at the close of the first half. Starting at its own 8 yard line, Chapman marched 87 yards in 15 plays and converted on three third downs to get to the Cal Lutheran 5 yard line. The big third down play came on a Vanderweil pass to junior WR Chris Langstaff for 38 yards. The Panthers then got a 22-yard field goal from sophomore K Jimmy Adranly in the closing seconds of the half to pull within four points, but that was as close as they'd get.

Chapman got another field goal from Adranly with 4:51 remaining in the third quarter, this time from 24  yards, but could not find the end zone.

Leading the Panthers offensively was sophomore RB Kevin Krail. In his first career start, Krail rushed for 91 yards on 18 carries in place of the injured Akio Lloyd.

The loss was the third straight for Chapman - its first three-game losing streak since 2006. The Panthers also fell to 1-10 against Cal Lutheran in their last 11 meetings.
