Football drops second-straight SCIAC battle

CLAREMONT, Calif — Chapman football dropped its second SCIAC contest at the hands of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 28-6, on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers opened the game with a 12-play eight-minute drive, converting on three third downs, however, on a 4th-and-13 the Panthers went for it at the CMS 37 yard-line, and the Stags were able to pick off the pass and take it to the house.

Tough, untimely turnovers were the mantra to this afternoon's contest.

In the third quarter, after the Stags scored another touchdown and Ken Baierl connected on two kicks; including a career-high 43 yarder, Chapman took the ball 53 yards to the CMS three-yardline, but a fumble at the goaline gave the Stags possession.

Chapman forced a punt, but got pinned inside their own five. Another fumble at the goaline gave the Stags a prime opportunity to punch in another score, and they did on the next play via a one-yard rush.

Later in the half, in an attempt to put a touchdown on the board, the Panthers drove into the redzone, yet again, and CMS forced another turnover. This one in the air, getting intercepted at the one.

Despite the lopsided score, the Panthers had 325 yards of total offense to the Stags' 287. But with CMS winning the turnover battle 4-0, the Panther's offensive battle proved to not be enough.

Chapman returns to Ernie Chapman Stadium next week as it will host Redlands with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
