Panthers tumble down the leaderboard at West Cup

BEAUMONT, Calif. – A rough second day by four-fifths of the Chapman University men's golf team saw the Panthers fall from seventh place on Monday to 12th place at the end of the West Cup Tournament on Tuesday. Sophomore Bryan Wise placed in a tie for 16th on the leaderboard with a second-round 77 and third-round 71 and finished at 12-over par at the Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon.

Wise's 1-under-par 71 in the tournament's final tied for third for the low score of the round. The sophomore had created a deficit for himself on Day 1 with an opening round 80 (8-over-par) and was tied for 42nd place heading into the final two rounds, but rallied on Day 2.

Meanwhile, Wise's teammates went the opposite direction as Chapman tumbled down the leaderboard. Senior Giovanni Chiappano, who opened with a team-best 76 on Monday and was tied for 14th place at 4-over, led the rest of the Panthers field with a 9-over-par 81 in Round 2 and an 85 in Round 3 and fell to 48th place overall.

Chapman scored a three-round total of 969 (plus-105) and finished in 12th place out of 15 schools competing in the event. The Panthers will next compete against Hope International at Old Ranch Country Club on April 7 in a non-conference rematch against the Royals, who Chapman edged by five strokes earlier this month.
