Strong final round pushes men's golf into fifth at Championships

BEAUMONT, Calif. – The Chapman University men's golf team finished the SCIAC Championships on a high note on Tuesday, shooting a team-combined score of 300 just two strokes behind the round leaders Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and finishing in fifth place overall in the three-day event at Oak Valley Golf Club.

Sophomore Bryan Wise climbed into the tournament's top-20 with a 75 on Tuesday, his tournament low round to finish strong. Wise ended with a three-round score of 233 and 25 strokes back of SCIAC champion Kelby Scharmann of the University of La Verne (208). Senior Kent Paisley finished just four strokes behind Wise with an overall score of 237, finishing in 26th place in the event with a team-high 31 pars in three days.

In all, five Panthers shot in the 70s in the tournament's final round on Tuesday, led by junior Nickolas Gates who shot a season-best 2-over par 74.

Sophomore Chuck Pedone had a roller coaster tournament after earning Chapman's tournament-low round of even-par 72 on Sunday and was in sixth place overall after Day 1. Pedone followed that up with a 20-over par in his second round and then shot a three-over 75 on Tuesday to finish tied for 29th overall, just two strokes back of Paisley.

Sophomore Kyle John equaled Pedone's 54-hole total of 239 thanks to a four-over 76 in the final round. John tied for seventh overall in the tournament with nine birdies.

After beginning the final round in a tie for sixth place, seven strokes behind Whittier College the Panthers bested the Poets by 16 strokes and Pomona-Pitzer by 17 strokes on Tuesday to finish in fifth place overall. La Verne edged Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by one stroke to earn the team championship.
