Cal Lu hands men's soccer its first SCIAC loss of the season

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team dropped its first match in conference play 2-1 to Cal Lutheran University on Monday night at Wilson Field. The Kingsmen netted a late game-winning goal punched in by F Zack Larson in the 76th minute to give them the victory.

Not only was the loss Chapman's first within the SCIAC, it snapped the Panthers' four-match winning streak.

Cal Lutheran (3-3-2 overall, 2-2-1 SCIAC) got the scoring started in the 37th minute as Larson crossed an indirect kick into the middle of the goalie box and found the feet of junior M Nathan Davidson who fired a shot past Chapman junior GK Nick Berardi.

The Panthers (4-2 overall, 4-1 SCIAC) would respond with a goal just 59 seconds later when senior F Gabe Recht-Appel knocked in a goal off an assist from sophomore M Daniel Friedman tying the game at one before the half.

The second half was a physical, defensive battle until Larson found himself alone with the ball in front of the Chapman goal and promptly snuck the ball past Berardi for the game-winner.

The Panthers out-shot the Kingsmen 18-9 including six shots on goal, but junior GK Jack Duncan stopped five of them, thwarting Chapman's attempt at a fifth consecutive win.

Chapman will head to Occidental College to take on the Tigers in a SCIAC matchup on Saturday at 7 p.m.
