Men’s soccer wins overtime thriller behind Matteoni’s two goals

ORANGE, Calif. - Oh captain, my captain! The Chapman men's soccer team bounced back from a four-game losing streak to beat the Caltech Beavers 2-1 in overtime at home earlier this afternoon. Senior captain Jarod Matteoni led the way for the Panthers, netting both of Chapman's goals.

The Panthers scored the first goal in the 23rd minute when junior Michael Bogart passed a through ball across the 18-yard box, finding Matteoni who one-timed it to the near post to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

Chapman fired off a couple more shots in the remaining 22 minutes of the first half but could not find the back of the net, taking its 1-0 lead with them into the locker room at the half.

Caltech sophomore Samir Johnson put the Beavers on the board 13 minutes into the second half. The midfielder's shot at the top of the 18-yard box was deflected and bounced just past the outstretched arms of Chapman goalkeeper Evan Owens, tying the match at 1-1 with 32 minutes left on the clock.

Caltech and Chapman battled back and forth in the remaining half hour, but neither squad scored a goal, sending the teams into a golden-goal overtime period.

The Panthers earned a throw in just under six minutes into the first overtime period. Freshman Chris Sanchez, known for his long throw, threw the ball all the way into the 6-yard box, where Matteoni connected perfectly with his head to send the Panthers streaking onto the field in victory.

Chapman goaltender Evan Owens played in his second contest of the season, recording two saves for Chapman. Caltech goalkeeper, sophomore Max Popken, tallied eight saves in his first career match.
