ORANGE, Calif. – After making a valiant comeback effort, the Chapman University men's tennis team came up short, dropping a 5-4 decision to Brandeis University on Thursday at the Chapman Tennis Courts. The Panthers' first loss came down to the wire as the Judges clinched the victory on the sixth and final individual match.

Closely-contested doubles matches set the tone for the day as Chapman (3-1) was able to salvage just one victory from Brandeis. Freshman duo Charlie Werman and Sam Mittledorf competed from the No. 2 position, earning an 8-6 victory over their counterparts from Brandeis moments after the No. 1 duo of senior Troy Akin and sophomore Brett Buford dropped a tough 9-8 decision.

After Chapman's top two-seeded players (Justin Thompson and Akin) fell in individual match play, its next three athletes rallied for three straight wins. Buford and Werman earned straight set victories from the No. 3 and No. 4 position, respectively, while Mittledorf rallied to beat Danny Lubarsky in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 10-6).

The comeback effort would fall short, however, when sophomore Hunter Morris lost in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) to Michael Secular, delivering the Panthers their first loss on the season.

The Panthers will be back in action on Saturday as they host Pomona-Pitzer at the Anaheim Hill Racquet Club. Doubles play is set to begin at 1 p.m. for the conference match.
