Men win back-to-back on the hardcourt

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team won back-to-back matches for the first time since February, earning victories over visiting Lewis & Clark College (Ore.) and Pacific Lutheran University (Wash.) over the weekend at the Chapman Tennis Courts.

On Saturday, the Panthers' top doubles pair senior Troy Akin and sophomore Brett Buford improved to 6-4 this spring with an 8-2 win and led Chapman to wins on two of the three doubles courts to gain an early advantage. The Panthers then claimed five of the six singles courts to seal the win and snap a three-match losing streak. Junior Justin Thompson also improved to 6-4 with a straight sets win 6-2, 6-2 and freshman Charlie Werman, playing on the No. 2 court for the first time this season, continued to roll with a 6-3, 7-5 win.

Chapman 8, Pacific Lutheran 1

The men made it two in a row on Sunday thanks to a clean sweep of the six singles matches. Werman ran his record to 10-1 in dual matches this season with his fourth win in a row, 6-1, 6-3, again from the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Thompson (No. 1) and Buford (No. 3) both improved to 7-4 this season and Akin, who had been 1-8 prior to the weekend, found a home on the No. 4 court, winning both of his matches including a straight sets 6-1, 6-2 win against PLU.

Chapman (5-6) is in the midst of a 10-match homestand that includes a doubleheader on Thursday against Pacific (Ore.) and UC Santa Cruz and ends with a SCIAC showdown with No. 3-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday.
