Curtain falls on men's tennis after sixth-place finish

THOUSAND OAKS – A lengthy and hard-fought win over Occidental College in the second round of the SCIAC Men's Tennis Championships was the highlight for Chapman University as the Panthers placed sixth in the conference with a 1-2 record over the weekend. Chapman defeated the Tigers 5-4 on Friday night to advance to the fifth-place match where it ran into Redlands.

Cal Lutheran hosted the two-day event between its own Poulson Tennis Center and the Matador Tennis Complex on the campus of Cal State Northridge.

First Round: Cal Lutheran 5, Chapman 0

After the Panthers were swept in doubles by the No. 18-ranked Kingsmen, Cal Lu got quick wins on the Nos. 5 and 6 courts to earn the shutout and advance in the winner's bracket. Only sophomore Brett Buford was leading for Chapman when the match was decided and top singles player junior Justin Thompson was headed for a third set after splitting the first two with the West Region's No. 4-ranked Moises Cardenas from Cal Lu.

Second Round: Chapman 5, Occidental 4

Freshman Charlie Werman earned the match-clinching victory with 7-6, 7-5 win over Kevin Siebs from Occidental. The win snapped a 4-4 tie and gave the Panthers their only win in the tournament. Werman improved to 17-7 this season to lead Chapman in singles wins. Buford also won in straight sets to improve to 15-9 this season as Chapman split the six with the Tigers in singles play. Starting for just the second time in place of Troy Akin, Werman paired with Buford on the No. 1 doubles court to earn a critical 8-5 win. Thompson and freshman Sam Mitteldorf also won on the No. 2 court 8-6 to give Chapman a 2-1 advantage after pairs.

Fifth-Place Match: Redlands 8, Chapman 1

The No. 19-ranked Bulldogs defeated Chapman to close out the tournament and the season, dropping the Panthers' overall season record to 8-14 (3-7 SCIAC). The West Region's 20th-ranked Thompson gave No. 7 Patrick Lipscomb all he could handle in three sets, but eventually fell 4-6, 6-2, 10-7. The loss dropped Thompson under .500 for the season at 12-13 overall. Akin notched the Panthers' only win on No. 4 court in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 10-7.
