Men's tennis sweeps singles to beat Concordia 8-1

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team won its second match in a row and first one at home this season, defeating visiting Concordia College (Minn.) 8-1 at the Chapman Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon. The Panthers swept singles play convincingly, losing just one set in the entire match between courts two through six.

Senior No. 1 singles player Justin Thompson earned his first dual match win of the season, snapping a three-match losing streak with a straight sets win over Concordia's Isaac Toivonen 6-2, 6-3. It was Thompson's first win over a regionally-ranked opponent this season.

From there, Chapman (2-2 overall) lost just one set over the final five singles matches. Sophomore Charlie Werman won on the No. 4 court for the third straight time, defeating Jesse Schneeberger 6-0, 6-0. And freshman Justin P. Thompson improved to 3-1 in dual matches this year with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Zach Zitur.

The Panthers opened the match taking two of three in doubles action as Werman and junior Brett Buford combined on an 8-2 win on the No. 2 court and Justin P. Thompson and sophomore Sam Mitteldorf blanked the Cobbers on court three, 8-0.

Chapman will face another out-of-region team and look for its third straight win when it hosts Bowdoin (Me.) on Sunday, March 8 at 1 p.m. at the Chapman Tennis Courts.
