Men's tennis sweeps Poets in singles competitions

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team defeated Whittier College in singles competitions and two of the three doubles competitions on Friday's 8-1 Panther win at the Anaheim Hills Racquet Club.

In the singles matches, sophomore Sam Mitteldorf maintained early leads against Joseph Laguna in straight sets of 6-1 and 6-0. Freshman Justin P. Thompson was pushed to a 7-5 set over David Stanko, but earned a 6-2 win in the second match. Justin P. Thompson now has a .636 percentage, well above the .541 team overall percentage.

Junior Hunter Morris was the only person to be pushed to three sets in singles when he battled Ian Ross. Morris defeated Ross in the first set 6-3 but dropped the second set 3-6. The final set between the two ended 10-4.

In the doubles competition, junior Brett Buford and sophomore Charlie Werman defeated Poets Samuel Farmer and Ross 8-5. Buford and Werman hold a team-leading 11-6 overall record.

In a debut coupling, Justin Thompson and Mitteldorf faced off against Stanko and Laguna to earn their first win together in an 8-6 finish.

The Panthers will host their final conference match of the season against the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags at the Anaheim Racquet Club on Saturday, April 18 at 2 p.m. Chapman will then go on to the Ojai Tournament April 24-26 and then move on to the SCIAC Championships May 1-3.
