Thompson earns SCIAC Newcomer of the Year award

ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University men's tennis freshman Justin P. Thompson has been named SCIAC Newcomer of the Year as part of the All-SCIAC team selected by the coaches for the 2015 season. Thompson was the Panthers' lone representative on the All-Conference team.

The rookie, who played 17 matches as Chapman's No. 2 singles player, posted a 6-2 record in SCIAC play and was 13-9 overall. Thompson ranked second on the team in overall winning percentage (.591), including an 11-6 overall mark on the No. 2 court and earned three wins against regionally-ranked opponents.

Thompson also teamed with sophomore Sam Mitteldorf for a 13-9 record in doubles play this season. The duo was 12-6 as the Panthers' No. 3 seed in dual matches, including a 5-4 SCIAC record. Their 13 wins as a team marked the third-highest doubles total in Chapman's Division III history.

Chapman (11-9 overall) earned its first winning record since 2005 and wrapped up the regular season ranked No. 38 nationally.

The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was established in 1915. The league is currently comprised of nine private colleges and universities in Southern California: California Institute of Technology, California Lutheran University, Chapman University, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, University of La Verne, Occidental College, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, University of Redlands, and Whittier College. The conference recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly and annual basis.
