No. 1-ranked CMS defeats Chapman at home

ORANGE, Calif. – No. 1-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps pulled ahead with an early lead to defeat the Chapman University men's water polo team 13-9 on Saturday morning. The Stags did not relinquish their lead throughout the game, regardless of Chapman's aggressive comeback.

The Stags started the game strong with six goals in the first quarter. Adam Hilborn was the first to strike for the Stags and their momentum rolled from there. Two goals from Alex Wagner, a goal from Tanner Cullen, and then a goal from Ellison Taylor topped off the quarter.

After being held scoreless in the first quarter, the Panthers battled to tally three goals in the second quarter. Corey Plaster, Mavrick Gaunt and Jeff O'Brien all scored for the Panthers. However the Stags tacked on a pair of goals to take the lead 8-3 at the end of the first half.  

Chapman made a comeback in the third quarter cutting the Stags' five-goal lead to three. Chapman's seven goals, at this point, was completely dispersed among seven different players.

The Stags held their lead throughout the game despite the Chapman comeback. Rye Newman, Stags goalie, finished the game with 21 saves. Without the saves, Chapman had 30 shots on goal. All in all, lead scorer for the Stags was Hilborn who found the net three times for Claremont.

Chapman's Wilson Parnell and Hashem Mossaad-Ahmed both recorded a pair of goals each.

The Panthers host Whittier on Wednesday, Nov. 11 for a night cap set for 7 p.m. Chapman will then recognize five seniors on Friday, Nov. 13 for a Senior Day match against Air Force Academy at 3 p.m. at Allred Pool.
