Chapman falls to CMS in SCIAC semis

ORANGE, Calif. – The fourth-seeded Chapman University men's water polo team fell 11-6 to No. 1-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday afternoon in the SCIAC semifinals at La Verne.  

Claremont jumped on the board first with a pair of goals in the first two minutes of the match. Chapman battled with a goal by Jeff O'Brien in the sixth minute and a goal at the buzzer by Willis Allen to tie the match up 2-2 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Stags held the Panthers scoreless going on a 3-0 run to take the lead 5-2 at the end of the first half.

Allen scored again in the third quarter to tighten the game 5-3, but the Stags offense wouldn't quit. Claremont went on a 4-2 to run to extend its lead over Chapman 9-5.

The Panthers finished the game with a goal by Eric Bungcag with three minutes left but ultimately Chapman came up short against the Stags who extended their win streak to 16 with Saturday's victory.

Chapman will face No. 3-seeded Redlands in the SCIAC third-place match at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
