Men's water polo falls to No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer in home opener

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's water polo team fell 11-6 to No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday morning. Sophomore goalkeeper Wesley Hertel put up a fight against the nationally-ranked Sagehens, tallying eight blocks and one steal in 32 minutes.

Pomona-Pitzer scored an early goal in the first 21 seconds of the game, but the Panthers answered back with two goals of their own from junior Kevin Dayan and senior Bennett Royce to take a 2-1 lead, which would prove to be Chapman's only lead of the game.

The second quarter saw back-and-forth goals, with Dayan dominating the Chapman scoring, netting three goals in a row for the Panther squad. The junior transfer helped Chapman tie the game twice in the second period, but the Sagehens held a 6-5 lead going into halftime.

Chapman only saw the back of the net once in the second half, as sophomore Cameron Genetti blasted one off a pass from freshman Hunter Ramaekers in the third quarter.

Pomona-Pitzer's scoring was well spread out between seven different players, but junior Adam Ward led the pack with a hat trick of his own.

Chapman returns to Allred Olympic Pool on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. as they take on La Verne in another SCIAC match.
