Perez hits first career grand slam, leads Panthers to split with Oxy

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University softball team split with Occidental College in a SCIAC doubleheader at El Camino Park on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers shut out the Tigers 8-0 in Game 1, but Occidental defeated Chapman 11-9 in Game 2.

Game 1: Chapman 8, Occidental 0 

Senior Taylor Cartwright singled up the middle in the bottom of the second to knock in junior catcher Lisa Perez to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The catcher led the Panther offense going 3-for-3 at the plate, with two lead off triples and her first career grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to give Chapman a 7-0 lead.

The junior also scored in the bottom of the fourth off a homer by sophomore Amber Perez to give Chapman a 3-0 lead. The Panthers final run was knocked in in the bottom of the sixth by freshman Sarah Taketa who singled to center field scoring junior transfer Taylor Espinoza.

The Panther defense was once again led by junior pitcher Natalie Both who recorded eight strikeouts and gave up just two hits in five innings.

Game 2: Occidental 11, Chapman 9

In Game 2, the Tigers jumped on the board first scoring two runs in the first and five in the second to put Occidental in the lead 7-5. The Tigers posted another run in the third and a pair of runs in the fourth to improve their lead over the Panthers 10-7. Despite a two-run effort in the bottom of the sixth by Chapman the Tigers held their initial lead 11-9 at the end of seven.

Freshman Mackensie Prileyand sophomore Alex Battest led the Tiger offense going three-for-four each at the plate. Occidental racked up a total of 14 hits against sophomore Natalie Both who recorded 11 strike outs in Game 2.

The Panther offense was led by freshman Kristen Weiser who finished the game 3-for-3 and Lisa Perez who went 2-for-2 in game two, both recording RBI doubles.  

The Panthers will travel to University of Redlands on Friday, March. 6 for a SCIAC doubleheader and then will return home to El Camino Park on Saturday, March 7 to host Pomona-Pitzer. The Panthers will play six of their next seven doubleheaders at home.

In game 2, the Tigers jumped on the board first scoring two runs in the first and five in the second. However, the Panthers battled back tightening the score 7-5 in the bottom of the second. Both the Tigers and Panthers would score two runs in the fourth to make the score 10-7. Despite a two-run effort in the bottom of the sixth, Chapman would be unable to catch the Tiger lead falling to the Occidental 11-9 at the end of seven.

Occidental collected 14 hits against Both,who recorded a season-high of 11 strikeouts in the second game. Freshman Mackensie Prileyand sophomore AlexBattest both led the Tiger offense finishing the game three-for-four each.

The Panther offense was led by freshman Kristen Weiser who finished the game three-for-three and Lisa Perez who finished the game two-for-two, both recording RBI doubles.
