Serven supplies walk-off single to earn split with La Verne

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University softball team split with La Verne in a SCIAC doubleheader at El Camino Park on Saturday afternoon. Chapman defeated the Leopards in eight innings in Game 1 3-2, but La Verne scored early in Game 2 to defeat Chapman 11-8.

Game 1: Chapman 3, La Verne 2

Heading into the eighth with the score tied 2-2, the Panthers junior OF Amy Serven singled up the middle for a clutch RBI driving in freshman pinch runner Rhiannon Geving to give Chapman the 3-2 walk-off victory over La Verne.

The Panthers scored first, when junior OF Gabrielle Leveratto roped a line drive off of the third baseman's glove to score leadoff senior OF Karina Muniz and give Chapman the 1-0 lead. The Panthers then extended their lead 2-0 when junior IF Larissa Rinauro scored on an RBI sacrifice fly to left by senior IF Lindsay Holt.

The Leopards collected their first run in the fifth when sophomore OF Alexis Schif homered to tighten the score 2-1 and then tied it on an RBI single to center in the seventh by freshman C Angelica Deangelo.

Junior P Natalie Both moved to .500 on the season recording her tenth win overall and collecting five strikeouts.

Game 2: La Verne 11, Chapman 8

In Game 2, the Panthers and Leopards were tied 1-1 heading into the third inning but a three-run homer by La Verne's sophomore IF Amanda Chavez gave the Leopards a 4-1 lead. La Verne then extended its lead 11-2 by racking up seven runs over the next three innings.

Chapman (14-16 overall, 11-13 SCIAC) battled back with a six run effort in the sixth to tighten the score 11-8 but were held scoreless in the seventh ultimately falling to the Leopards.

Leveratto led the Panther offense with her first career grand slam in the bottom of the sixth, along-side freshman IF Kristen Weiser who collected a pair of hits for the Panthers, including a first-pitch solo homer to left in the bottom of the second.

Chapman will travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday, April 24 for a doubleheader and then return home on Saturday, April 25 for 'Senior Day' against Cal Lutheran with first pitch of the doubleheader set at noon at El Camino Real Park.
