Rain spoils 'Senior Day' split with Cal Lu

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University softball team split with Cal Lutheran in its final SCIAC doubleheader of the regular season at El Camino Park on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Chapman shut out the Regals in Game 1 7-0, but Cal Lu scored 10 runs in the fourth inning of Game 2 to defeat Chapman 12-2.

Game 1: Chapman 7, Cal Lutheran 0

The Panthers offense came out hot in Game 1, when junior OF Gabrielle Leveratto hit a three-run homer in the first to put the Panthers up 3-0 over Cal Lutheran. Chapman added another run in the fourth to take the lead 4-0 when senior IF Taylor Cartwright flied out to deep left knocking in senior C Kelsea Eakin.

In the bottom of the sixth, freshman DP Sarah Taketa flied out to left field to score freshman PR Kristen Yee to put the Panthers up 5-0. Chapman then extended its lead to 7-0 when Leveratto singled to shallow right field driving in senior OF Karina Muniz and junior OF Amy Serven.

Junior P Natalie Both improved to 11-12 and had five strikeouts in Game 1 holding Cal Lutheran scoreless for seven complete innings while giving up just two hits.

Game 2: Cal Lutheran 12, Chapman 2

Tied 2-2 in the fourth the Regals jumped out with three runs capitalizing on two errors on bunts by the Panthers to give Cal Lutheran the lead 5-2. The Regals then tagged on another seven runs to extend their lead to 12-2 over Chapman.

The Panthers scored a run in the first and another in the third, but were held scoreless through the fifth ultimately ending their season with the 'Senior Day' split. Eakin and sophomore IF Amber Perez collected a pair of hits for the Panthers both finishing the game 2-for-3.  

Chapman will finish the season with a 15-19 record overall and 11-15 in SCIAC.
