Perez leads Panthers to Oxy split

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team split a doubleheader with Occidental College on Friday afternoon at El Camino Real Park. The Panthers took game one 11-6, but the visiting Tigers slugged out an 11-1 win in game two.

Game 1: Chapman 11, Occidental 6  

The Panther bats came out hot in the first inning of game one, scoring four runs to take an early 4-0 lead. In the second, Baily Stevens hit a solo shot over the left field fence to tighten the score 4-1. The Tigers then tacked on another in the third with an RBI single by Cora Roberts to squeeze the score 4-2.

Chapman added a pair back in the third on a squeeze by sophomore Rhiannon Geving and a sacrifice fly RBI by sophomore Lindsay Rawls to pad the Panthers lead to 6-2.

The Tigers would go on to score three more runs but the Panthers would tack on five in the sixth to solidify the 11-6 win. Senior Natalie Both earned the win throwing a complete seven for the Panthers, while junior Amber Perez led the Panthers with three hits, including a pair of doubles.

Game 2: Occidental 11, Chapman 1

In game two the Occidental offense came out slugging scoring three runs off of four hits to take an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Tigers then went on to score seven in the third and another in the fifth to earn the win. Stevens and Alex Battest both went yard for the Tigers during game two, while collecting two RBI each.

The Panthers only run came from senior Gabrielle Leveratto who scored on a wild pitch in the fifth after manufacturing a double to deep left. Freshman Analisa Ruff collected the Panthers only other hit of the game on a single to left.

Chapman will travel to Cal Lutheran Saturday, April 16 for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
