Softball swept in SCIAC doubleheader

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to visiting Redlands, 7-5 and 8-3. The Bulldogs swept the season series from the Panthers.

Game 1 – L, 7-5

Chapman (1-7, 1-5 SCIAC) took a 5-2 lead after the first three innings but couldn't hold on as Redlands scored the winning runs in the top of the seventh. It was the second heartbreaking loss in a row for Chapman after Redlands hit a walkoff single on Friday in Redlands to take the first game of the series.

Senior Michaela Foisy went 2-for-3, stole a base and scored a run. Foisy also made one of Chapman's five errors in the game that led to a pair of unearned runs.

Chapman also hit three triples in the contest of the bats of junior Erin Coogan, sophomore Rani Lauwers and sophomore Tracie Okumura. Coogan slapped a triple into the left field corner as it landed just inside the foul line and rolled past the shallow left fielder. She scored Okamura in the second for a 2-1 lead.

Lauwers tripled to lead off the third and scored when a throw home in a run down flew to the backstop. Okumura followed with her triple to the gap to score senior Samantha Tong. She came in to score with senior Kyra Gallego immediately followed with a single right back up the middle for a 5-2 lead.

The Panthers managed just three more hits after the third inning, stringing two singles together in the sixth, but wwere unable to push across anymore runs. Meanwhile, Redlands loaded the bases in the fifth and pushed across three runs to tie the game at 5-5.

Chapman's fifth error of the game led off the top of the seventh and the Bulldogs capitalized with a run-scoring triple and single to take a 7-5 lead. Madeline Gonzalez pitched four and a third innings in relief, holding the Panthers scoreless on three singles. Junior Mykala Tokunaga took the loss in the circle after giving up Redlands' final three runs in two and two-thirds innings of relief.

Game 2 – L, 8-3

The Bulldogs took all the momentum of the late inning victory in the second game, plating five runs in the fourth to key the victory. Chapman managed just four hits in the game and committed four more errors.

Foisy hustled around for a double on a shallow hit into center field and stole two bases while scoring twice. She scored in the first on Lauwers squeeze bunt and sophomore Jessica Kim scored on the next play when Tokunaga grounded out to second.

Redlands responded for a run in the second to tie the game at 2-2 and exploded for five runs in the fourth. After an error to start the innings, the Bulldogs followed with five hits to take a 7-2 lead. Foisy scored Chapman's final run in the fifth when she stole second and came all the way around to score when the throw down rolled all the way to the center field fence.

Senior Sarah Hartmann went the distance in the circle and struck out four.

The Panthers are back at home on Tuesday to face Hope International at 4 p.m. in a doubleheader.
