Lastinger's first career homer not enough to top Sagehens

ORANGE, Calif — Some late inning scores and a first career home run were not enough on Wednesday, Mar. 16 for the No. 20 Chapman Panthers to take down the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens in a non-conference matchup.

The first career home run came off the bat of freshman Morgan Lastinger who smoked a moon shot to left field in the second inning. The homer gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead at the time.

Chapman held a 3-2 lead moving into the fifth inning before starting pitcher Kelly McCarty got pulled from the game. In her first start of the season, McCarty went four innings allowing five hits and two earned runs.

Katie Carder entered the game, and the Sagehens found hole after hole with bloop singles, and bunt base hits. A couple liners in the gap later and the score stretched to a commanding 9-3 Sagehen lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers looked to be amounting a comeback after a pair of freshmen, Mo Lynch and Taylor Corcoran, reached base via a RBI double and single, but Pomona-Pitzer's Paige Blackwell came in and shut the door.

With the loss, the Panthers fall to 15-2 on the season. The Sagehens improve to 9-12.

Chapman looks to bounce back on Thursday, Mar. 17 against Westcliff.
