Women defeat Cal Lu, Lee sets men's record in medley

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Freshman swimmer Jonathan Lee broke a four-year old school record in the 400-yard individual medley, but the Chapman University men's swimming and diving team lost to Cal Lutheran University on the road on Saturday. The women fared much better, however, defeating the host Regals 162-62 in their third-to-last SCIAC meet before the conference championships.

Lee's swim in the 400 IM – his second school record of the season – was one of three wins for the Panther men on the day. He bested the previous Chapman record by nearly three and a half seconds with a finish of 4:19.44. Lee also swam the breaststroke leg as a part of the Panthers' first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:44.63.

Once again, senior Kirsten Spicer paced the women in the water with victories in the 50-yard (25.59) and 100-yard freestyle (56.27) events. She also anchored the Panthers' 200-yard medley relay as Chapman touched the wall at 2:01.60, taking first place in the event by more than five seconds.

Growing ever-versatile in her rookie season, freshman diver Kayla Dimicco not only won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions, but she led off Chapman's win in the 200-yard freestyle relay, which earned a time of 1:45.42. Dimicco with a 3-meter score of 188.75 has now taken first on the high board in three consecutive SCIAC meets, having only lost to Claremont's Maia Presti back in December.

Freshman distance swimmer Mary Welton also earned a pair of first-place finishes and career-bests in the 500-yard and 1650-yard freestyles. Welton won the 500 by nearly nine seconds with a time of 5:24.62 and cruised to another victory in the 1650 with an 18:27.16 mark.

Chapman's men's and women's teams return home for the final two SCIAC meets of the year, hosting Redlands and La Verne on Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by 'Senior Day' one week later against Caltech.
