Divers break new ground with Regionals performances

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – For the first time in school history, Chapman University divers competed at the NCAA Regional Championships, which were held Feb. 27-28 at the Josh Davis Natatorium, hosted by Trinity University (Texas). Freshman Joey Luba placed fifth in both the men's 1-meter and 3-meter events while freshman Kayla Dimicco earned as high as an eighth-place finish in the women's 3-meter dive.

In 11 dives, Luba scored a cumulative 412.35 in the men's 1-meter springboard, ranking fifth against eight other divers. James Stevick from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps placed first in the 1-meter while fourth place went to Scott Mackay from University of La Verne, all three representing the SCIAC.

In the 3-meter, Luba scored 384.05 points against seven other divers, many of whom also represented the SCIAC conference. Luba finished fifth behind SCIAC rivals Stevick (second) and Patrick Quarberg (fourth) from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Dimicco finished 12th in the women's 1-meter competition, scoring 324.05 points overall, only 0.9 points behind the 11th-place finish and 1.85 points behind the ninth place. She also finished eighth in the 3-meter with a score of 358.50, which was the highest score of any SCIAC competitor in the event.

Luba and Dimicco set school records during the SCIAC Swimming & Diving Championships in Whittier with their performances in the men's and women's 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events.
