Chapman swimmers open strong at Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's swim team hit the pool for its season-opening competition at the Thompson Aquatic Center, participating in the Bulldog Pentathlon with SCIAC foes Redlands and Whittier on Saturday morning.

Freshman swimmer Connor Broughton impressed for the Panthers, as he placed sixth overall in the men's event with a total time of 4:52.54.

Junior AJ Silva finished in the top-10 with a final mark of 4:57.85. The junior shaved nearly three seconds of his backstroke setting a career-best of 59.32.

Freshman Axel Reed rounded out the Panthers top-3 with a total time of 5:05.31, swimming an impressive 57.70 in the 100-fly.

On the women's side junior swimmer Martina Exlerova paced Chapman, placing 10th in the event with an overall mark of 5:33.39.

Freshman Sadie Wiens (5:35.83) and sophomore Rachel Isaacs (5:37.78) finished 13th nd 14th respectively in the heat. Weins started out just behind Isaacs in the fly but shaved time of the breaststroke and backstroke to finish two seconds ahead of her respectively.

Chapman will take its next two weeks to prepare for the Pomona-Pitzer Relays in Claremont on Saturday, Oct. 31.
