First meet, first school record to fall

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – School records fell as the Chapman University track & field teams opened the 2020 season at the San Marcos Mangrum Invite on Saturday. The Panthers had several personal-bests to start the season.

The women's sprint medley relay team led the day of impressive performances with a school record time of 4:30.85. Junior Madison Jacobs led off the record-breaking relay, followed by freshman Sarah Mirkhani, junior Gabi Siguenza and sophomore Carly Trent. The previous school record – set in 2011 – went down by nearly 10 seconds.

Trent and Siguenza went on to take third and fourth in the 600m run with Trent running a 1:45.64 and Siguenza coming in not far behind1:45.80.

Juniors Donovan Wilson and Aki Shigeyama led the men's sprinters, taking second and third in the 600m run. Wilson's 1:23.58 was less than half a second behind the winner and Shigeyama came in at 1:24.71. Wilson's second place finish tied for the best of any Chapman athlete.

Sophomore Maija Girardi set two new PRs in her three events and placed second in the javelin amongst the competitors for NAIA and NCAA Division II schools. Her mark of 35.75 meters in the javelin placed her second overall – tied for the top finish by any Panther on the day. Girardi set PRs in the discus and shot put, setting her shot put PR by over one meter with a heave of 10.03 to take fourth.

Senior Josanni Martinez and junior Camryn Hamaguchi also set personal-bests in the discus with Martinez's throw of 26.78 meters bettering her previous best by over 3.5 meters and placing her seventh.

Junior Armond Gray leaped his way to a top-3 finish with a mark of 5.76 meters in the long jump. He took third in the event.

Freshman Katie Hansen and senior Drake Butler led the distance runners in the 3000 meter run. Hansen placed fourth with a 10:46 and Butler ran 9:14 to take fifth. As a group, the men's team nearly rewrote the entire Chapman top-10 in the event. The women's team did the same with most Panthers making their debut in the event.

The Panthers head to the Westmont Sunshine Open next Saturday as the season continues.
