Mirro wins 800 with school record time at first SCIAC Mult-Dual

ORANGE, Calif. – Freshman Maddie Mirro broke Chapman record in the 800m run to lead the Chapman University track & field teams at the first SCIAC Multi-Dual of the season at Whittier College. The Panthers scored against Whittier and Occidental but fell to both.

Mirro won the 800 for Chapman with a school record time of 2:22.95, taking down the record set a year ago. She also took fourth in the 1500 meter run. Mirro was just one of several strong performances from Panther freshman.

Freshmen Dani Berch and Olivia Lowe each set personal-bests in the 200 meter dash. Berch finished at 27.17 while Lowe clocked in at 29.21.Freshman Audrey James took second in the 5k with a 19:25.40.

Junior Camryn Hamaguchi and Maija Girardi led the Panthers in the field events. Girardi – an All-SCIAC performer in 2019 – bettered her All-SCIAC throw in the javelin to take second overall. She threw the javelin 36.47 meters (119-feet, 8-inches). She also set a PR in the shot put by nearly a meter with a heave of 9.85 meters (32-feet, 3.75-inches). Hamaguchi also set a PR in the shot put with a mark of 10.20 meters (33-feet, 5.75-inches).

The men's team had a pair of second-place finishes to lead the day. Senior Derek Ohara took second in the 100 meter dash with a 11.12 and junior Donovan Wilson finished second in the 400 meter with a 49.23. Wilson broke the all-time school record, set in 1969. Ohara also led off the men's 4x100m relay that clocked in at 43.18, nearly equalling the Panthers' time from the SCIAC Championships last year.

Freshman Anthony Hart ran a 9:57.35 in the steeplechase – the fastest time in the event since Chapman revived its men's program. He also set a personal-best in the 800 meter run with a 2:06. Freshman Josh Lee also ran a personal-best in the 800 with a 2:11.

Freshman Max McCarthy set a personal-best in the 400 meter with a 53.01 and junior Jose Guerrero set a PR with a 4:19.4 in the 1500 meter run.
