Bethel puts Chapman to bed with late-night loss

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's basketball team fell to visiting Bethel University (Minn.) 72-49 in a game that ended just before midnight on Tuesday in the Panther-Bulldog Classic finale at the Hutton Sports Center. The Panthers closed out their pre-conference schedule going just 2-5 and will kick off the SCIAC season after the New Year with a pair of road games at Whittier College and Occidental College.

It was a rough start for Chapman (2-5) even before the tipoff when a power outage forced a delay of the start of the game for over an hour. Once the game began (a 10 p.m. tip), the Panthers never were able to find their groove, shooting just 17.1 percent in the first half and limited to six field goals in the period. Bethel took a 21-point lead into halftime.

Chapman finished shooting 26.8 percent from the floor, a season-low at the Hutton Center. Meanwhile, Bethel (8-2) shot 54.3 percent for the game and out-rebounded the Panthers 42-36.

Five different Royals scored in double digits, led by C Rachel Parupsky and Sydney Schultz with 13 points each. Parupsky added seven rebounds, while Schultz made four three-pointers.

For Chapman, sophomore G Megan Charles led all scorers with 16 points off the bench. Senior G Andrea Villanueva poured in 13 points and four assists for the Panthers.

The Panthers fell to 1-4 at home this season and following away games on Jan. 3 and 7, return to the Hutton Center on Jan. 10 to host defending co-SCIAC champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 2 p.m.
