Panther women earn lopsided win over Pomona-Pitzer

ORANGE, Calif. – With its most lopsided win of the season, the Chapman University women's basketball team is heating up at the right time. The Panthers handed visiting Pomona-Pitzer Colleges an 84-50 win at the Hutton Center on Wednesday night and have now won three of their past four games – all in conference play.

Led by 48 points from its bench, Chapman (5-7 overall, 3-1 SCIAC) jumped out to a 33-point halftime lead and cruised to its second home win of the season. The Panthers received a double-double from freshman G Irma Munoz – the first of her career – who led all players with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The rookie made 7 of 11 shots from the floor in just 15 minutes of play.

Fourteen different Panthers scored points including senior G Lynne Higashigawa who had nine points (4 of 5 FG) and four boards. Senior PG Andrea Villanueva paced the offensive tempo, leading the way with eight assists and eight points. Chapman shot 46.8 percent (37 of 79) from the floor in the game.

Cold shooting in the first half plagued Pomona-Pitzer (2-11 overall, 1-3 SCIAC) as it shot just 12 percent from the field before the intermission, including a dry spell of over nine minutes without a field goal.

Three Sagehens reached double figures in scoring thanks to a stronger second half where they shot 46.4 percent. Alaina Woo and Hannah Green (off the bench) combined for five three-pointers and scored 12 points apiece.

Currently sitting in third place in the SCIAC standings, the Panthers will try to make it four out of five as they travel to Caltech on Saturday in a 5 p.m. tipoff. Chapman will play four of its next six conference games on the road, where it has a winning mark (3-2). The Panthers return home to host Redlands on Jan. 24 at 2 p.m.
