Women's hoops break away in second half to defeat Bulldogs
ORANGE, Calif. –The Chapman University women's basketball team broke away in the second half to defeat University of Redlands 62-49 at the Hutton Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
Redlands jumped out ahead first taking the lead 15-7 at the 10:42 minute mark in the first half. However, a 9-2 Panther run sparked by a three-pointer by freshman G Jaime Hum-Nishikado allowed the Panthers to make it a one point game, trailing the Bulldogs 17-16 with 6:42 at the clock. After trading leads eight times in the first half the Panthers entered the second half tied 25-25 with Redlands.
The Bulldogs took their last lead of the game 30-27 three minutes into the second half, because a 9-1 run put the Panthers up 35-31 with 14:18 on the clock. Chapman's offense held the lead the rest of the game and extended it 55-39 at the 6:06 minute mark. Redlands edged back with just under four minutes to go making it 56-46 but the Panthers reamined in control of the lead.
Freshman C Sydney Olivier came off the bench for the Panthers to score a career high of 14 points and eight rebounds while senior Andrea Villanueva added 13 points for Chapman and recorded three rebounds and one assist.
Looking to maintain third-place standing in conference, Chapman will continue SCIAC play at home on Monday, January 26 at the Hutton Sports Center at 7:30 p.m. The Panthers will then play their next two games on the road before returning home to tip off against Occidental for the second time this season on Saturday, February 7 at 7:30 p.m.
