Women's golf opens new season with record-breaking effort

VENTURA, Calif. – School records fell as the Chapman University women's golf team opened the 2021 fall season with a fourth-place finish at the CA State Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday. Two single round records fell in Tuesday's second round with sophomore Kaila Higgins' record-breaking effort leading the team to a program low score.

As a team, the Panthers shot a 290 (+2) on Tuesday to jump over CMS in the team standings. Their 290 was just one stroke shy of the low round for the day among the 11 teams on the course. It also lowered the school record for a single round score by 14 strokes.

In the two-day tournament, Chapman put together a team score of 597 (+21), which is also a school record by 13 strokes.

Higgins became the first golfer in program history to finish a round under 70 strokes as she finished the second round with a three-under 69. She finished four-over for the tournament in 11th place to lead the Panthers. Freshman Rachel Truong had a strong showing in her Panther debut, opening with a 76 (+4) and finishing with a 73 (+1). Her 149 (+5) placed her 12th overall.

Senior Kristen Lee also opened the season with a strong score. She finished tied with Truong with a 149. Lee opened with a 75 (+3) and lowered her score by one stroke in the second round. Freshman Emily Cho shot a 151 (+7), finishing with a two-over 74 to contribute to the school record effort on Tuesday and taking 21st overall. Senior Sydnee DiMascio was the fifth Panther in the tournament, shooting a 161 (+17) to take 41st.

The Panthers take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a dual match on Sep. 25 at Upland Hills Country Club.
