Sagehens keep Chapman winless at home

ORANGE, Calif. – The upstart Pomona-Pitzer Colleges women's lacrosse team handed host Chapman University its second straight loss at home to begin the season, downing the Panthers 11-8 at Wilson Field on Wednesday night in a SCIAC contest. The Sagehens limited Chapman to just one first-half goal and held on in the second half for the win.

Chapman (1-3 overall, 1-3 SCIAC) fell into fifth place in the conference standings with the loss – uncharacteristic of a Panthers team that didn't lose its third game last season until 11 games in.

Pomona-Pitzer (3-1 overall, 3-1 SCIAC) controlled the tempo and possession in the first half and got some big defensive stops on free-position plays. The result kept Chapman off the scoreboard for the first 28-plus minutes of the period. Senior A Allie Kontny finally got the Panthers on the board with a goal with 1:38 left before halftime and Chapman trailed 5-1 at the intermission.

Sagehens' GK Gaby Fukumura made eight of her 13 saves in the first half and held the Panthers scoreless 0-for-5 in free-position attempts. Chapman finished the game just 2-for-13 on free-position shots.

Back-to-back goals by Kontny and senior M Lauren Mah in the first two minutes of the second half got Chapman back in the game, down 5-3, but that was as close as it would get. The Sagehens would score four of the next five goals to take a five-goal lead, their largest of the game. Pomona's Sarah Markowitz led all players with four goals in the game and added an assist.

Mah led Chapman with three goals and an assist while Kontny finished with a pair of goals and a pair of assists.

Next for the Panthers will be Oneonta State (N.Y.) who comes to Orange on Saturday in a game that begins at noon at Wilson Field.
