Last-minute rally, OT goal boost Panthers over Redlands

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's lacrosse team scored twice in the final 33 seconds of regulation to overcome a two-goal deficit, and then defeated visiting University of Redlands in overtime 14-13 in a SCIAC match at Wilson Field on Saturday night. The win marks the Panthers' fourth straight victory and gives them the regular season sweep over Redlands.

Trailing by two goals with 33 seconds remaining, junior A Kylee Moore scored an unassisted goal to pull Chapman (5-3 overall, 3-3 SCIAC) within one of Redlands at 13-12. The Panthers then won the ensuing draw control and sophomore A Gretchen Rodenberger scored a quick goal off a pass from junior M Brooke Martini to tie the game with 8 seconds left in regulation and force overtime.

In the extra period, senior A Michelle Mendoza scored the only goal, the game-winner with 4:23 on the clock to lift Chapman to the win.

Rodenberger led the Panthers with four goals and two assists to take over the team point-scoring lead with 27 this season. Freshman M Becka Wachtel added three goals and an assist for the Chapman offense. Sophomore GK Tara Sonnemaker made nine saves for the Panthers in between the pipes.

After jumping out to a 4-1 lead early, Redlands (7-5 overall, 3-3 SCIAC) only trailed once in the game (6-5) before the game-winning goal was scored in overtime. Bulldogs' Dulce Moll led all scorers with five goals and four assists in defeat.

Chapman returns home on Wednesday to host Whittier College at Wilson Field at 7 p.m. The Panthers are currently locked in a three-way tie for third place in the SCIAC standings with four games remaining on their schedule.
