Five Panthers named to All-SCIAC lacrosse team

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University women's lacrosse team was well represented when the All-SCIAC women's lacrosse team was announced on Monday with five Panthers receiving All-Conference honors. Sophomore Gretchen Rodenberger and junior Brooke Martini headlined the list with first team honors, while freshman Becka Wachtel, junior Kylee Moore and senior Kristin Robbins were all named to second team. In addition sophomore GK Tara Sonnemaker was named to the sportsmanship team.

Rodenberger ranked seventh in SCIAC with 47 points and 14 assists. The attacker had 33 goals and started all 12 conference games for Chapman, while leading the team with 30 draw controls and a 54.1 shooting percentage. The sophomore finished the season with several team-bests, scoring six points against University Redlands, then recording another six points, tallying eight shots-on-goal and winning six draw controls against Kean University in March. 

Starting attacker Martini ranked in the SCIAC top-10 taking 63 shots this season, 51 of which were on goal. The junior led the Panthers with 11 free-position goals, ranked second on the team with 28 goals this season, and 35 points. Whittier College on April 22. Martini currently holds several Chapman records including games played (49), goals (71), shots on goal (134), shots attempted (164) and free position goals (24).

In her senior season, Moore led the Panthers with a team-high four assists against Plymouth State and recorded six points against Redlands in March. Moore leaves the Panthers as Chapman's record holder in goals per game (1.74), while ranking second in points per game (2.40), goals (61), assists (23) and shots attempted (128).

Senior defender Robbins ranked third in the SCIAC with 30 caused turnovers. The senior led the Panthers with 31 ground balls this season and ranks at the top of Chapman career records with 68 ground balls and 65 caused turnover during her three-year span at Chapman.

In her rookie season, Wachtel scored 21 goals and tallied six assists for a total of 27 points for the Panthers. The freshman led the team with a .846 shots on goal percentage and ranked third on the team with 23 ground balls.

Meanwhile Sonnemaker received sportsmanship honors as part of the SCIAC spring sports postseason awards. The sophomore finished the season starting all 14 games for the Panthers. She recorded a 9.84 goals-against-average allowing 133 goals while totaling 116 saves.

The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was established in 1915. The league is currently comprised of nine private colleges and universities in Southern California: California Institute of Technology, California Lutheran University, Chapman University, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, University of La Verne, Occidental College, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, University of Redlands, and Whittier College. The conference recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly and annual basis.
