Wachtel slashes career-high six goals in win over Tigers

ORANGE, Calif. –  Junior Becka Wachtel scored a career-high six goals to lead the Chapman University women's lacrosse team to a 20-8 victory over undefeated Occidental College on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.

Occidental scored twice in the first three minutes of the match to take an early 2-0 lead, but the Panthers responded with an 8-0 run over a 130minute span to take the lead 8-2 at the 15-minute mark. Wachtel scored back-to-back goals for the Panthers on that run and went on to net two more before the end of the half.

The Panthers finished the first half leading 13-4 with junior Stacey Zuppa and senior Tessa Oliaro notching a pair of goals each.

In the second half Chapman continued to outscore the Tigers, scoring seven more goals while giving up just three and forcing a running-clock. The Panthers were also a perfect 11-for-11 on clears throughout the entire match.

On the defense, senior goal keeper Tara Sonnemaker improved to 2-0 at the net after recording 13 saves for the Panthers. Freshman Riley Cooke led Chapman's passing game with five assists and Zuppa picked up a game-high four draw-controls.

Up next, Chapman will travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, March 4.
