Women's lacrosse falls on Senior Day, Thompson sets ground ball record

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's lacrosse team fell 20-12 on Senior Day to visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Panthers honored their three seniors prior to the opening draw of their final home match of the season.

Senior Shelby Thompson scooped up nine ground balls and caused five turnovers in her final home match. Her nine ground balls set a school record for ground balls in a single match. Fellow seniors Danielle Zahn and Lucy Schwartz each scored a pair of goals. Zahn added in four caused turnovers, six draw controls and four ground balls.

The Panthers took an early 4-2 lead, fueled by sophomore Alexandra Callaway's two goals in the first nine minutes. However, CMS scored the next six goals of the contest to go up 8-4 and the Panthers were never able to close the gap entirely.

The Panthers pulled back within two with 5:40 left in the first half on a Zahn goal but CMS netted two more goals before halftime for a 10-6 lead. Sally Abel led the Athenas' attack with fie goals while seven more players tallied two goals each.

Callaway scored four goals to lead the Panthers and junior Leah Donnelly added in two more. Sophomore Preetha Raj made 11 saves in goal, including holding CMS to just a 3-for-8 mark in free position shots.

The Panthers put on some pressure in the second half with 15 shots and forced Emma Goldfield to make five of her six saves.

Chapman will finish its season on the road with a crucial match at Redlands on April 20 and the regular season finale at Pomona-Pitzer on April 24. With a win at Redlands, the Panthers will clinch a spot in the SCIAC Tournament.
