Chapman comes up short against Pomona-Pitzer, loses 2-0
ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's soccer team dropped its second match in a row, losing 2-0 to Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday evening at Wilson Field. In four matches this year, the Panthers are now 0-3-1 at home.
Pomona (5-2) controlled the tempo in the first half, limiting Chapman to three shots. In the 18th minute, sophomore M Allie Tao gave Pomona a 1-0 lead with a goal deep from the left wing into the top right corner of the net which barely escaped the reach of senior GK Chloe Canta. Chapman's goalie had three saves on the night, but left late in the second half with an injury and was relieved by junior GK Rissa Andersen who quickly tallied three saves in the final 17 minutes of the game.
The best scoring opportunity for the Panthers in the first half came just seconds after Tao's goal as junior F Aimee Evans banged a shot off the crossbar and then the ball nearly went in off the ricochet. Evans had four of the Panthers eight shots on the night, including two shots on goal.
Chapman (3-4-1) increased the defensive pressure in the second half which created a few more offensive opportunities late, but they were still unable to capitalize as Pomona sophomore GK Emma Wolfarth came up with several of her six saves in the second half.
In the 83rd minute, the Sagehens got its second goal after Chapman was whistled for an infraction in the box. Senior F Traci Lopez took the penalty kick with 7:01 remaining and knocked home the shot for her team-high fifth goal of the season.
Pomona outshot Chapman 19-8 on the night. Chapman now hits the road to play Redlands on Sept. 28. The rival Bulldogs knocked Chapman out of postseason play last year.
