Panthers settle for tie despite Lilly's two goals

ORANGE, Calif. –  The Chapman University women's soccer team had to settle for a 2-2 tie against visiting George Fox University (Ore.) on Monday night at Wilson Field. The Panthers were shutout over the final 81 minutes and now must hit the road for their next four matches in search of their first victory of the season.

Chapman (0-1-1) certainly had its chances, out-shooting the Bruins 28-11 in the game, including 11-0 over the final 20 minutes. George Fox GK Alyssa Montero held the Panthers in check for much of the contest, turning away 10 shots for saves, including three in overtime.

The Panthers jumped on the board quickly, scoring their first goal of the season at the 3:45 mark. Senior F Kate Lilly took a pass from junior F Aimee Evans along the right wing and found the lower-left corner of the goal for her 20th career goal and first of the season.

Chapman's 1-0 lead held until the 28th minute when George Fox F Melanie Gaither pocketed her first of two goals in the game to even the score.

However, the Panthers answered right back and just 18 seconds later. Immediately following the kickoff, Lilly scored her second goal of the game and Chapman regained a 2-1 advantage. For Lilly, the goal gave her 52 career points moving her into a tie for 10th all-time in Chapman history.

Gaither scored a quick goal for the Bruins to start the second half making the score 2-2 in the 49th minute and the tie would hold up.

Chapman junior GK Rissa Anderson faced 11 shots and made four saves in goal, including two in the second half.

The Panthers will travel to Santa Cruz for a pair of games next weekend and then play at Occidental and Whittier the following week.
