Women's soccer hands Whittier first defeat of 2015

ORANGE, Calif. – Junior Kortney Kingsmore's late goal lifted the Chapman University women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over league-leading Whittier on Wednesday. The Panthers (4-3, 1-2 SCIAC) recorded their second shutout of the season to get the victory.

Whittier (5-1, 2-1 SCIAC) came in with an unblemished record while Chapman was winless in its first two SCIAC matches. Kingsmore's goal changed all that as she headed in the game-winner in the 80th minute.

Senior Molly Simpson set up the goal as she gained possession in the middle of the field and drove to the right of the 18-yard box. She sent a cross back into the middle of the box and found the head of Kingsmore. Her close range header squeaked through the hands of the Whittier keeper for the match's only score. It was only the second goal the Poets had surrendered this season.

The Panthers nearly scored again as sophomore Lara Jacobson touched a shot past Alexi Cruz, who had come well off her line, but the Whittier's back line was able to sweep the ball away just before it found the net.

Junior Kristin Kleinow made a save the only time she was tested to record the shutout. Chapman's back line was stingy all day, allowing only the one Whittier shot.

The Panthers remain home and return to the Wilson Field pitch on Saturday when they host La Verne at 11 a.m.
