Women’s soccer match ends in scoreless draw

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's soccer team played to a 110-minute scoreless draw with the Cal Lutheran Regals earlier this evening. The Panthers rattled off a whopping 12 shots on goal in the 0-0 tie.

Chapman out-shot Cal Lutheran 19-11, forcing Regals goalkeeper Alexa Soto to make 12 saves, many coming from point-blank range on breakaways. Cal Lutheran rattled off six shots on goal, forcing sophomore Kelsey Bland to make six saves of her own.

Junior Riley Pidgeon opened the match with a shot in the third minute that missed high. Pidgeon had her best opportunity of the night on a free kick a few yards outside the 18-yard box. The midfielder struck the ball well, curling the ball and the wall to the far post. She hit the crossbar, missing the goal by inches.

The Panthers hurled eight more shots in the second half but could not find the back of the net at the end of regulation.

Chapman put the pressure on in the first overtime period, taking three shots on goal while earning two corners. Cal Lutheran regained momentum in the second overtime, taking two shots as opposed to Chapman's zero.

Senior Faith Holloway, sophomore Cate Combi and freshman Shannon Coyle anchored the back line for the Panthers, playing all 110 minutes in the double-overtime match.

The Panthers enjoy a bye weekend before returning to Wilson Field on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. to host Whittier as they kick off the second half of their schedule.
