Women’s soccer season ends in overtime loss in SCIAC Semis

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Chapman University women's soccer team's season ended earlier this evening with a heart-breaking 1-0 overtime loss at Cal Lutheran in the SCIAC Semifinal match.

After a scoreless 90 minutes in which the Regals out-shot the Panthers 9-6, the two sides headed to the first overtime period. Less than one minute into OT, junior Alexandra Fagerberg found a wide-open Janelle Gutierrez on the left side of the 18-yard box. Gutierrez hit a volley one-time, sending the ball far post into the side netting and the Regals streaking onto the field in celebration.

Chapman put the pressure on in the second half, taking four shots and forcing Cal Lutheran goalkeeper Alexa Soto to make three saves. In a game that was played mostly in the midfield, Panthers goalkeeper Kelsey Bland made one save in the second half in the effort.

Chapman's back line played the full 91 minutes. The Panthers were anchored throughout the season by seniors Faith Holloway and Stephanie Fox, sophomore Cate Combi and freshman Shannon Coyle.

The Panthers posted an overall record of 11-4-3, their best record since Chapman's inaugural season in the SCIAC when the Panthers won the 2012 SCIAC Tournament Championship. Chapman had not been to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament since the 2016 season.

Chapman graduates five seniors and returns to Wilson Field next year for the 2020 season.
